Cleaning Your Gutter for Summer

April 30, 2021 11:25 am

As summer comes to a close and autumn approaches, gutter maintenance is a task you don’t want to miss off your to-do list. Gutter maintenance may be something you may want to avoid over the fun and relaxing summer months, but gutters can easily get clogged from debris during this time.

Branches, leaves, and dirt can often find their way into the gutter system, and without maintenance, will remain there. Although general gutter maintenance should be done all year round, before summer is the perfect time for a deep spring clean of your gutters before the harsher weather conditions hit. So, how exactly is the best way to go about making sure your gutters are clean?

Inspect That Gutter

First and foremost, you will want to give your gutter a once-over to check for wear and tear, leaks, or loose brackets/screws. If you find any loose screws, you can often tighten them up yourself. However, if you are unsure as to whether there is too much damage, you will need to call in expert help to get a replacement gutter part. Don’t undertake gutter cleaning yourself. It’s dangerous and without the right equipment you can damage the gutter system.

Hire Expert Gutter Cleaners

Giving your gutter a deep clean with a high-pressure hose is key to making sure your gutter is maintained. Once the experts have hosed everything down, they will remove the debris blocking the gutters.

They will finish off the job using some soap, warm water, and a sponge to give your gutter and final wipe down. The build-up of debris from lack of cleaning can lead to unpleasant odours outside and accumulate water, which in the worst-case scenario can cause structural damage to a building.

Install Gutter Guards

Gutter guards can avoid debris build-up but also deter any rodents that may be trying to find their way into your gutter system. They are a great way to significantly reduce the build-up of debris and are readily available online and in DIY stores.

Tree Branch Maintenance

Autumn brings falling leaves, which although may be picturesque, can be detrimental to your gutter. Preventative measures are important and a much better choice than waiting until your gutter is full of debris and you are left in a worse situation than you needed to be. Start trimming tree branches to make sure you will not be in trouble with any branches as they begin to fall.

Without gutter maintenance, you could be left in a situation where you are hit with severe damages and need to reach out for expert help when preventative measures like gutter cleaning could have been taken before it got to that point. With a few of these helpful tips, however, you should be set for whatever is thrown at your gutter!
